Festival III: THE GYMNOPAEDIA. This was a five-day festival of dancing and gymnastics and was closely related to the Spartan training regime. The festival held in honour of the slain at the ancient battle of Thyrea, included a battle of champions, and troops of young and old men sang of heroic deeds. It is believed that young boys participated in the morning, before it became too hot, while the men performed in the afternoon, and the old men in the evening. The group leaders wore elaborate head dresses made from either palm leaves or feathers. A grand parade was held at the end of the festival.
