Each game in the Devil May Cry series includes several difficulty levels, in order to increase replayability. Traditionally, a grueling but feasible difficulty is accessible from the start, alongside an easier difficulty that is sometimes unlocked by repeatedly failing in the standard mode. Successive levels of difficulty are then unlocked each time the previous mode is completed, all the way up to a "Dante Must Die" mode, where enemies also gain access to Dante's signature Devil Trigger, or in
